頃(ころ) vs. 時(とき) - Which one??

1.デパートへ歩いた時に雨が降った。

2.デパートへ歩いた頃に雨が降った。

The rain fell when I walked to the department store.

Which is more suitable? 

The answer is 1, or at least that’s the natural way to go. 

時（とき）&　頃（ころ）both have the meaning of ‘when’, however the context in which they are used creates the difference. 

Important points for 時

• When we talk about a past event that’s not too past, we use 時

先週、試験を受けた時に緊張した。

せんしゅう、しけんをうけたときにきんちょうした。

I was nervous during the exams last week. (improvised translation)

• When talking about an instant(that doesn’t last too long) that took place

卓球をしていた時にバランスが崩れそうになった。

たっきゅうをしていたときにバランスがくずれそうになった。

I almost lost my balance while playing table tennis. (improvised translation)

• More about facts than a memory(which usually involves emotion)

昨日、晩ご飯を食べていた時に電話が鳴った。

きのう、ばんごはんをたべていたときにでんわがなった。

The phone rang when/while I was having dinner last night.(improvised translation)

Important points for 頃

• When talking about a past event, and I mean REALLY past

小学生の頃、ぶらんこでよく遊んだ。

しょうがっこうのころ、ぶらんこでよくあそんだ。

I often played with swings when I was an elementary/primary student. (improvised translation) 

• When talking about an event ( that lasts for quite some time)               

少女だった頃よく図書館へ行きました。　　　　　　　　 　　　　　

しょうじょだったころよくとしょかんへいきました。　　　　　　   

I often went to the library when I was a child(a certain period you perceive as childhood).   (improvised translation)    

• More concerned with memory(filled with emotions) than fact.  Associated with reminiscent feelings.

まだ子供の頃はよく親と付き合ったな。

まだこどものころはよくおやとつきあったな。

How I used to spend time with my parents when I was still young. (improvised translation )
